desert island watch
May 03, 2014,00:54 AM
As I was sitting in the lobby of my hotel in Abu Dhabi after the completion of a three day conference, I took some time off waiting for my flight which was much later in the day.
I was wearing the Fifty Fathoms Sport during this trip, and while I looked at it, I reminded myself what I have thought many times before: 'in case I could only have one watch on a desert island for years, that would be the one'. I have owned this watch since 2008 and to this day it remains the most complete watch I ever owned.
It is so beautifully designed that it has not a single item I would change, meaning I find it perfect. The sapphire bezel which is reminiscent to bakelite bezels of old, combined to the curved sapphire crystal and the polished case, makes the watch a modern-day vintage. I also find perfectly fitting the factory strap which seems to be indestructible.
I have been using this watch diving, motorcycling, etc. Not a single problem and not any scratches thanks to the crystal and sapphire bezel protecting practically fully the watch from the top.
What I also love is that for 6 years now, I have met in the flesh only one guy who has been wearing this watch (incredibly enough he also was driving the same car
), which shows it is a very personal watch for those who can appreciate a Fifty Fathoms and its pedigree as well as the traditional way in which it is assembled.
In my collection there are other classics such as the Nautilus, Patrimony, Sea-Dweller, as well as in-house competitors (50th anniversary Fifty Fathoms, blue version of the Fifty Fathoms Sport), but I know that on that desert island I would rather have the standard Fifty Fathoms telling me the time, for all the above described characteristics.
A wonderful weekend to all,
Alexandros
PS: it would be interesting to hear what would be your companion, on your desert island guys
