...this is presented as a Dive Watch, therefore it is about the best tool/instrument/what-have-you for the job.
It is not as simple as the 'dreaded' quartz versus pushing what can be done mechanically.
To dismiss dive computers as just a bunch of microchips ignores some of the important aspects of a dive instruments, the work and thought that have gone into them.
Ignoring efforts to track nitrogen (mechanical efforts at these got called 'Bendo-matics' for a reason) and starting with legibility. The big faces on dive computers are necessary for this. Dive in any murky low visibility water and you'll appreciate big, dumb simple numbers/symbols and backlights/lume/OLEDs. One glance to get the information is what you want. Then we get to the interface. Simplified controls that can be used with thick gloves, touch screens, tap to change cases (no buttons), the ability to prioritise the information on the display, to change mixes, to run different algorithms, it goes on. And while the costs may not compare with the X Fathom, the top end computers (CCR, multi-gas, etc) cannot be compared to a $20 Casio.
This X Fathoms is an exercise in packaging a lot of functions into a single case. Which is of interest for sure, but not as a dive watch where these functions need to be more effectively separated out in order to be useful. Would you want your car to feature a speedometer, a tachometer, oil temperature and fuel gauge all on a single small dial? The strange choices of colours for the markings, the strange choice of a 0-5min 'decompression' scale, the jumbled display - all hint at a lack of seriousness.
I say this as someone who does his most complex dives with a deco schedule written on wetnotes, a combined bottom timer and depth gauge; who does the odd simple dive with just a watch and a mechanical gauge; who is trying to get a mechanical Decompression computer into working order; who gets old dive watches waterproof and encourages friends to dive them. I felt bad about replacing the points on the Alfa with electronic ignition....
